I first started learning how to use Wwise and do “implementation” in 2012 through Leonard Paul’s School of Video Game Audio (I don’t get paid from that link – I just like supporting Leonard’s work).
For me, learning Wwise wasn’t all that difficult. I tend to pick up software fairly quickly.
What was frustrating was the process of going from putting sounds into Wwise and building a system within the Wwise GUI, to actually making it all work properly in the game.
In the industry, what I’m referring to is often called “writing hooks”.
In linear media – movies, videos, etc. – the process to get something to work is easy. You just slap it on a timeline and hit play. Done.
In games, it’s entirely different. You can even build a system in a piece of software that describes how sounds should play back in various different circumstances – but at some point the game and the system you setup need to talk to each other and trade data.
Often this is a big black box of magical wizardry owned by a programmer.
What drove me nuts in Leonard’s course wasn’t that he didn’t teach it (and honestly it wasn’t the focus of the course), but I wanted to know it all.
How to fire off oneshots.
How to play, stop, and manipulate loops.
How to affect “real time parameter controls”.
How to set game states.
How to call different parts of dynamic music.
all through code.
It took me quite a while to put all the pieces together, and to learn what little section of programming I wanted to know to make all of that happen.
The rabbit hole gets deeper, trust me.
But there’s a number of you who are just like me. You know audio, you probably know sound design, but when it comes to writing a single line of code to fire off a sound from middleware – you’re lost.
You’re not just lost either, it’s actually scary. You don’t want to break things, it all seems overwhelming, coding is intimidating, whatever.
I’m here to tell you it isn’t that hard. It really isn’t.
Even if you’ve never written a line of code in your life, I’m happy to teach you from the pitfalls I’ve fallen into. I’ll save you time, frustration, and take you from fumbling through the dark to quickly finding your way through a well-lit path.
If all of that sounds up your alley – you want to learn how to put Wwise and Unity together with C#.
Today my video course which will teach you exactly that is available for preorder.
There are limited copies, a handful have already been purchased.
You won’t permanently miss out – I’ll make more available eventually – but I can’t tell you when, and I usually don’t lower the prices of my products.
If you preorder, you’ll also be automatically getting all the bonuses given to those who buy the “premium” edition (currently there will be an eBook covering how to use the Wwise Authoring API). If you know anyone who preordered Quit Aspiring – you’ll know it went from a PDF, to including a kindle version, and two audio and video interviews, all for $10.
So go take a look, and if you decide it’s meant for you – commit to it – you have my deep gratitude for supporting my work as well.
I want to see you all get better at what you do, be better equipped, and find industry jobs faster. I can’t wait to see what you do with it!
