Just wanted to share a pretty awesome concept with you that BBC R&D has been working on – Object-Based Broadcasting.
With regular broadcasting, the signal is one large stream of unchangeable data potentially combined with metadata. In Object-Based Broadcasting, the metadata takes center stage – each of the bits of the data is sent with the stream and its purpose is described by metadata. Therefore, the receiving device can change and pick-and-choose what parts of the stream it uses.
In the video below, you’ll see that due to the extra metadata – editing becomes as easy as highlighting words in a text editor. You can also imagine this being used in a way like CSS is to HTML – describing the layout organization, and usage of data on a per-device basis.
